GLOBAL AQUA TECHTM provides unique customised solution for Water-Energy self-sustainable solution through integration of Solar Energy System, Rain Water Harvesting & Recharging System and Water & Waste Water Treatment Plant & Waste Management System.

Development is a double-edged sword. Reducing poverty, triggering economic growth and building up a more inclusive society, that come with new and bigger social and environmental challenges leads to quest for a sustainable development path.
Global warming, population growth, urbanization and growing consumption of water and energy continue to disrupt our already fragile ecosystem. Therefore it can be said that natural resources like Rainwater harvesting can be promoted as a core adaptation strategy for achieving the global security and sustainability of water resources in an era of anthropogenic climate change and Solar-Wind energy is the first and foremost element of alternative energy resources which are the need of the day and the future of our industrialised, civilised world.

The world is facing numerous problems. Apart from the rising danger of global warming, a major issue of concern is the shortage of water. With the growing population and over-consumption of resources, the scarcity of water has been emerging as a major problem in today’s time. India is also amongst those nations which are likely to face the shortage of water in the upcoming years. As per reports, India now uses more groundwater than China and United States combined.
By 2025, an estimated 1.8 billion people will live in areas plagued by water scarcity, with two-thirds of the world’s population living in water-stressed regions. 97% of the water on the Earth is salt water and only three percent is fresh water; slightly over two thirds of this is frozen in glaciers and polar ice caps. Only 3% of the Earth's water is fresh water. Most of it is in ice caps and glaciers (69%) and groundwater (30%), while all lakes, rivers and swamps combined only account for a small fraction (0.3%) of the Earth's total freshwater reserves. Rainwater is abundant, renewable and high quality water source for domestic or industrial use.

As opposed to fossil fuels, which draw on finite resources that may eventually become too expensive to retrieve, natural, renewable energy sources are generally unlimited in availability. Solar power generation has emerged as one of the most rapidly growing renewable sources of electricity. Total energy consumption is already six times what it was in 1950 (WWDR), and is projected to grow by as much as 55% by 2030.
While in use, solar panels create absolutely no waste or emissions. Unlike fossil fuel power plants, they produce clean, renewable energy from a fuel source that requires no locating, excavation, transportation, or combustion. It's a simpler, cheaper, cleaner, and all-around better energy solution. Solar energy is a good alternative to replace fossil fuel as the major energy source because solar power is renewable at absolutely no cost to supply energy infinitely. The world pollution is getting worse. Any effort that can reduce the pollution to the environment helps to save the earth. 1 kW Solar power saves: 77 kg coal from being burned; 397 litres of water consumption; 136 kg of CO2 being released into the atmosphere.

When you decide it is time to invest in rain water collection, use and recharge systems, we have everything you need. We also provide consultancy services for comprehensive Water Shed Management and Rain Water Harvesting & Groundwater Recharge System:

About Rain Water Harvesting:
Rain water harvesting is the accumulation and deposition of rainwater for reuse before it reaches the aquifer. Uses include water for garden, water for livestock, water for irrigation, and indoor heating for houses etc. In many places the water collected is just redirected to a deep pit with percolation. The harvested water can be used as drinking water as well as for storage and other purpose like irrigation.
GLOBAL AQUA TECH has been pioneered the concept of Rain Water Harvesting and Recharging, Defunct Boring Recharging, Water Shed Management System with Geo Hydrological Test, Study and Consultancy Services.

What is Rain Water Harvesting?
Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) is a technique of collection and storage of rainwater into natural reservoirs or tanks, or the infiltration of surface water into subsurface aquifers (before it is lost as surface runoff). One method of rainwater harvesting is rooftop harvesting.
It simply means catching and holding rain where it falls and using it. You can store it in tanks or you can use it to recharge groundwater. Rainwater harvesting, is a process that involves collecting rainwater and increasing its value by eliminating impurities or directing it to places where its use is highly required. It’s a practice that has been around for a long time. The only difference is that now better methods have been developed to make the process a great success. New technologies have come into play and are now making the process easier and more efficient.

Advantages of Rainwater Harvesting:
1. Water For Domestic Use: Rainwater harvesting is beneficial because it provides a source of water for domestic use. The collected water can be used for house cleaning purposes, washing laundry and for cooking. When treated, rainwater is good for drinking. It is an easy way of obtaining water for use in the home.
2. Water For Industrial Use: Industries can also harvest rainwater for use in some of their processes. Rainwater meant for industrial use is normally harvested in large scale. Such companies can construct their own dams or have underground tanks to store rainwater.
3. Supplementary Water Source with improved Water Quality/ less impurities: Many areas experience water shortages during summer due to lack of rain, high rate of evaporation and ground water level goes down. It can be difficult to get a reliable source of good water during these periods. Groundwater recharging by rain water increases water level and dilutes the water impurities. Harvesting rainwater is therefore seen as a way of preparing for the sunny days when water is scarce as well as good quality water.
4. Cost Effective-Save Water & Electricity Bills: We basically harvest rainwater for free because it is naturally occurring. If you store enough water during the rainy season, you may never have to pay for water services again because you’ll have enough supply to last you through the summer as well as saves in Electricity in raising water. This saves by cutting down your expenditure on water & electricity bills.
5. Reliable Flow of Harvested Water: Even though harvesting of rainwater depends on rainfall, once stored, the supply of the available quantity is guaranteed. You can have an uninterrupted flow of water from the place of storage as long as the amount harvested has not been exhausted. The same cannot be said when you depend on an outside source to supply your water. There is also the benefit of locational-suitability because the source of water is in your place of stay.
6. Mitigates/Reduces The Impacts of Floods: Harvesting rainwater plays a key role in mitigating or reducing the impacts of floods. When rainwater is directed to farms through trenches or collected in dams, its movement is controlled. This prevents the accumulation of water in one area, something that often causes flooding. Rivers can also overflow and cause flooding in the adjacent areas. The negative impacts of floods are too many and costly. Harvesting rainwater is, therefore, an effective way of reducing the impacts of this natural disaster.
7. Building and Construction: Collected rainwater can be used for building and construction. The process of building a house requires a lot of water. Harvesting rainwater would thus avail water for this activity.
8. Helps In Preventing Water Pollution: Rainwater flowing on the ground surface can carry with it a lot of impurities and toxic substances. When it drains into water bodies, it pollutes them because of these impurities. Harvesting rainwater, therefore, prevents pollution of water bodies.
9. Irrigation: Rainwater is good for farming because once harvested, it can be used for irrigation especially during the summer. One can, therefore, have a thriving farm and realize a bumper harvest.
10. Saves Potable Water: Instead of using clean and treated water for other purposes such as washing and in the toilet, rainwater can be used. This saves potable water which would then be used for drinking and cooking only.

Surface Mounted/ Run Off Rain Water Harvesting with Filtration: Surface run off harvesting is most suitable in urban areas. Here rain water flows away as surface run off and can be stored for future use. Surface runoff rain water in ponds, tanks and reservoirs built for this purpose. This can provide water for farming, for cattle and also for general domestic use. Without sufficient water health and hygiene are severely affected. This adds to the environmental pollution.
Surface water can be stored by redirecting the flow of small creeks and streams into reservoirs on the surface or underground.

Roof top rain water harvesting with underground recharge: Harvesting rainwater from roof-tops is an easy and eco-friendly method of augmenting household-level water availability. Roof-top rainwater harvesting (RRWH) involves diverting and recharging (or) storing part of the rainwater that falls on the roof of a house. RRWH for recharging groundwater is a common practice implemented in individual houses as well as apartment complexes.
In such cases, harvested water is directed into a recharge pit which collects and slowly recharges into the groundwater storage / aquifer in that area. But, storing the rainwater and directly using it is also a feasible option for those who want to directly benefit from augmented water availability.
* Roof top water harvesting can be done in individual homes or in schools.
* For this the first requirement is to intercept the rainwater to flow towards a definite direction.
* The water should reach a bucket or a tank through pipes made from wood or bamboo. In urban areas pvc pipes can be used.
* The rain water can be directly collected by keeping a bucket or container beneath the roof.
* The first flow of rain water will usually carry with it dust particles, leaves, insects and bird droppings. So it is best to use a detachable downpipe to divert the first rain water.
* Recharge pits can be constructed to hold rain water. These can be of any shape or size, depending upon the amount of rain the area receives. These pits need to be filled with, boulders, gravels and coarse sand, filtration media which will act as a filter for the impurities that are carried along with the first flow of water.

ROOF TOP AND SURFACE RAIN WATER HARVESTING AND RECHARGING SYSTEM THROUGH INJECTION WELL: * An injection well is a device that places fluid deep underground into porous rock formations, such as sandstone or limestone, or into or below the shallow soil layer.
* Artificial recharge of ground water by well injection for storage and recovery has proven to be a viable means of water management.
* Recently the option of refilling natural aquifers with injection or percolation has become more important, particularly in the driest region of the world.
* Surface runoff can also be recharged into dry wells, or simply barren wells that have been modified to functions as cisterns.
* These hybrid storm water management systems, called recharge wells, have the advantage of aquifer recharge and instantaneous supply of potable water at the same time.
* They can utilize existing infrastructure and require very little effort for the modification and operation.
* The activation can be as simple as inserting a specially designed perforated uPVC Pipe into the well shaft. Vertical pipes for conduction of the overflow to the bottom can enhance performance. The area around the well acts as funnel. If this area is maintained well the water will require little purification before it enters the cistern

DRY / DEFUNCT BORE WELL RECHARGE: We can recharge a dry bore well by either Direct or Indirect Method:
* Direct recharge: Recommended only if the bore well has gone dry or is yielding a negligible amount of water.
* Indirect recharge: For well functioning bore wells we recommend indirect recharge.
* Roof top rain water can be harvested through existing tube wells. In areas where the aquifer that holds the ground water has dried up, tube wells source deeper into the soil for water. Roof top rain water harvesting can be done through these dried up tube wells to rehydrate the dried subsoil water level.
* The level of water-output is improved: When bore wells are recharged using the technology, the level of water gets increased. It works even for the completely dried up bore wells if proper management is done while harvesting the rain water. It is a fully tested mechanism that involves simple steps.
* Quality of water is enhanced: Using naturally filtered rain water results in the naturally purifying the water collected in the ground water tables. The impurities, hardness and presence of toxic substances including fluorides are reduced with time. So, the quality of water is enhanced.
* Affordable product: As compared to the other solutions of water harvesting, bore well recharge technique is cheap and affordable. To set up a bore well recharge, it requires natural materials available locally and hence it can be done at a very low cost.
* Permanent solution: When a bore well is recharged, it will never dry up. With each year of usage the underground water tables will refill themselves with the rain water and the bore well will be up and working permanently.
* You can customize it: The bore well recharge technique is fully customizable according to the land of the farm and site. Be it a farmhouse or factory or educational institute, it is possible to refill any bore well of urban as well as rural area.
* Eco-Friendly option: When you opt for the bore well recharge technique, you opt for an Eco-friendly option for meeting your water requirements. You not only resolve your water-scarcity problem but secure an eco friendly option for the future generation.

Solar Energy in India:
India, a rapidly growing economy with more than 1 billion people, is facing a huge energy demand. The country stands fifth in the world in the production and consumption of electricity. The electricity production has expanded over the years but we cannot deny the fact that the population of the country is also expanding. The power produced in the country is mostly from coal (53%) and it is predicted that country’s coal reserves won’t last beyond 2040-50. More than 72% population living in villages and half of the villages remain without electricity. It’s high time that our country should concentrate more on energy efficiency, conservation and renewable energy. To meet this surging demand, solar energy is the best form of energy to fulfill the energy needs of India and bridge the energy demand-supply gap. India has tremendous scope of generating solar energy. The geographical location of the country stands to its benefit for generating solar energy. The reason being India is a tropical country and it receives solar radiation almost throughout the year, which amounts to 3,000 hours of sunshine. This is equal to more than 5,000 trillion kWh. Almost all parts of India receive 4-7 kWh of solar radiation per sq. meters. This is equivalent to 2,300–3,200 sunshine hours per year. States like Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan, and West Bengal have great potential for tapping solar energy due to their location. Since majority of the population lives in rural areas, there is much scope for solar energy being promoted in these areas. Off-grid Solar Power Plant: It is a stand-alone or off-grid system, uses battery power storage to provide back-up during hours of darkness, power outages or during high demand. Energy control plays a key role when it comes to an off-grid energy supply.
The Power from Solar energy source (a solar array) goes to a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) charge controller in the inverter that regulates the charging of the batteries of your battery bank (Tubular +ve plate lead acid or VRLA type). Battery bank voltages are typically 12V, 24V, 48V. Power from the battery goes through the inverter where the DC power is converted to AC power. AC power goes to the main panel and secure load panel which run of the system. Advanced, integrated inverter/controllers will be the enabling technology to maximize the benefits of residential and commercial solar energy systems, both to the system owners and to the utility distribution network.
• Sun shines on the solar panels or wind turns wind turbine blades, generating DC electricity.
• The DC electricity is fed into a regulator which controls the amount of charge.
• Deep cycle batteries are charged.
• 12 volt appliances can be run directly off the batteries or the current routed through an inverter which converts it to 240V 50Hz AC electricity; suitable for running standard home appliances.

On-Grid Solar Power Plant: Grid-tied or on-grid solar power system produces solar electricity that is fed directly into the utility grid. Grid-connected or utility-interactive PV systems are designed to operate in parallel with and interconnected with the electric utility grid, consists of solar panel, one or several inverters, a power conditioning unit and grid connection equipment. GSE’s SPV on-grid system range from small residential and commercial rooftop system to large utility-scale solar power station.

Hybrid Solar Power Plant: We offer wide range of customized hybrid solar power plant. Due to the decreasing cost of battery storage, systems that are already connected to the electricity grid can start taking advantage of battery storage as well. This means being able to store solar energy that is generated during the day and using it at night. When the stored energy is depleted, the grid is there as a backup, allowing consumers to have the best of both worlds. Hybrid systems are also able to charge the batteries using cheap off-peak electricity (usually after midnight to 6am).
There are also different ways to design hybrid systems, but we will keep it simple for now.
• The battery bank. In hybrid system once, solar power is used by the appliances in your property, any excess power will be sent to your battery bank. Once the battery bank is full, it will stop receiving power from the solar system.
• The meter and electricity grid. Depending on how your hybrid system is set up and whether your utility allows it, once your batteries are fully charged excess solar power not required by your appliances can be exported to the grid via your meter. When your solar system is not in use, and if you have drained the usable power in your batteries your appliances will then start drawing power from the grid.

Wind-Solar Hybrid System: Wind and Solar hybrid power systems are designed using solar panels and wind turbine generators for generating electricity. Wind-Solar Hybrid System with Battery Backup for emergency power outages. A off-grid sine wave inverter allows solar panels and wind turbine to charge a battery bank.
• The major advantage of solar / wind hybrid system is that when solar and wind power productions are used together, the reliability of the system is enhanced. Additionally, the size of battery storage can be reduced slightly as there is less reliance on one method of power production. Often, when there is no sun, there is plenty of wind.
• Customer can select the appliances that they want powered during an emergency power outage, and then choose the correct battery bank size.
• Our packaged systems are ideally suited to remote homes, schools and other off-grid applications. They can also be retrofitted to existing diesel-generator systems to save on high fuel costs and minimize noise.
• We have standard hybrid systems available to meet your power needs. We can also tailor a system to suit should you have a smaller or larger power requirement.

In India, nearly 600 million people lack access to adequate sanitation, increasing the risk of groundwater contamination. According to the World Bank, diseases like diarrhoea kill approximately 800,000 children under age five every year and leave millions more malnourished and stunted. In an effort to address this absence of sanitation, which is especially acute in rural areas that lack access to water and sewage infrastructure, the Indian government has set the target of 100% sanitation by 2022 and is working to boost cleanliness and end open defecation in the country.
However, while building toilets across the country is the need of the hour, it is also important to pay attention to environmentally-friendly set ups and local conditions.
It’s innovative thinking like this that can help increase the number of people who have access to toilets – and perhaps even change the way the world uses them. Here’s a look at eco-friendly toilet designs that can play an important role in the battle for better sanitation for 600 million Indians who defecate in the open.
Bio-digester toilets are designed to convert human waste into gases and manure. The zero-waste bio-digester technology uses psychrotrophic bacteria like Clostridium and Methanosarcina (these microbes can live in cold or hot climate and feed on waste to survive) to break down human excreta into usable water and gas. Once applied, the bacteria can work for a lifetime.
Waste from toilets are sent to a giant underground bio-digester tank where anaerobic digestion takes place. Methane gas produced in the tanks can be used for different purposes, including firing up gas stoves and generating electricity while the leftovers (popularly called Humanure or ‘Human manure’) can be used for gardening and farming. It does not have any geographical or temperature limitation and also does away with the need to set up large sewerage networks.
The technology was originally developed by the Defence Research Development Organization’s (DRDO) research lab in Gwalior to meet the sanitation requirements of soldiers serving in the high altitudes of Ladakh and Siachen (Earlier, the waste was collected from deep pits and then incinerated which required energy and labour). The best feature of this toilet is that it totally does away with manual scavenging, is low on maintenance and installation cost and can be adapted to any geo-climatic conditions of the country.

Faq on SOLAR Energy:

Q: Why solar energy?

A: As opposed to fossil fuels, which draw on finite resources that may eventually become too expensive to retrieve, renewable energy sources are generally unlimited in availability. Solar power generation has emerged as one of the most rapidly growing renewable sources of electricity.

Q: Why solar energy is better?

A: While in use, solar panels create absolutely no waste or emissions. Unlike fossil fuel power plants, they produce clean, renewable energy from a fuel source that requires no locating, excavation, transportation, or combustion. It's a simpler, cheaper, cleaner, and all-around better energy solution.

Q: Why the solar energy is important?

A: Solar Is Clean and Safe. Solar is a safe alternative which can replace current fossil fuels like coal and gas for generation of electricity that produce air, water, and land pollution. ... Use of solar energy will eliminate these unsafe, unclean consequences from using conventional fossil fuels.

Q: Why is it better to use solar energy?

A: Solar energy is a good alternative to replace fossil fuel as the major energy source because solar power is renewable at absolutely no cost to supply energy infinitely. The world pollution is getting worse. Any effort that can reduce the pollution to the environment helps to save the earth.

Q: What are the main advantages to solar energy?

A: A: Let's look at 12 great reasons to use solar power and solar lighting systems over traditional electric.

  1. Green: Solar is green. Green is the new black. Enough said. Green energy is totally the new rage, but it is also a way to look out for the future of our planet and reduce our impact.

  2. Renewable: Solar is a renewable energy source. The sun is always present and even the cloudiest days, there is a bit of insulation available for the solar panels to soak up.

  3. Available Anywhere: Solar can be installed anywhere, even when what it is powering is in the shade. No matter what the circumstance, if there is a sunny spot nearby the solar can be installed to power something remotely installed. There is even technology today turning roofing or windows into photovoltaic sources.

  4. Durable: A silicon wafer is not durable itself, but sticks it behind some glass and you have the making for something that can withstand a lot more of the elements. Best of all, as technology increases, the durability of the glass increases; check out Solar World's Indestructible Panels. Other protection, such as protective panel backs, can be used to increase the durability of free standing solar power systems.

  5. Eco-Friendly: No harmful gases come from a solar panel.

  6. Cost Savings: Solar provides cost savings by not having to pay for electricity, especially since electric costs continue to rise where the cost of solar continues to fall. Cost savings also can be calculated by eliminating the need to trench in grid power, disturbing surrounding landscapes and hardscapes, repairing areas, etc.

  7. Tax Incentives, Subsidies and Incentives under JNNSM:
Various tax exemptions, capital subsidies and incentives are available for several components and sub-components of solar energy value chain. JNNSM promotes the assembly of solar modules after import of cells which is free from import taxes. Some steps to avails subsidy can be summarized as shown: Other benefits like Generation based incentives (GBI), 80% accelerated depreciation income tax benefits on renewable energy products including solar. Several products like Solar lanterns, street lights, blinkers and traffic signals are to be manufactured under specifications laid down by MNRE to avail capital subsidy benefits. Also the Generation based incentives.

  8. Easy Installation: Solar panels are easy to install, typically only needing a few bolts to hold them secure and some basic wiring. Solar lighting systems provide the solar power system at the top of the pole for most installation configurations, leaving all important electrical material at the top of the pole. Solar power systems can require a bit more for a simple installation; however, the low voltage DC power is much safer to work with than standard electric.

  9. Low Voltage: Solar utilizes lower voltage, typically 12 or 24 Volts DC, which means safer usage and installation.

  10. Energy Savings: Solar utilizes lower powered items such as LED / CFL lamps, lower powered electronics, etc. that do not use as much power as standard electric systems. Also, LEDs are powered from 12 VDC initially and require AC adapters to power with standard electric. By using DC power for LEDs, they are able to operate more efficiently by providing more light and less heat.

  11. No Trenching: Got a parking lot that needs lighting but the cement has already been poured? Need to put in a camera that is across the road from power lines? That’s fine with solar since each system stands alone and can be mounted anywhere. Oh, and did we mention the cost savings since you don't have to tear up that existing landscape and then repair it.

  12. Battery Backup: Most solar systems today utilize a battery backup that allows for three plus days storage of the power needed to keep the system running (the best systems offer a minimum of five nights autonomy). That way, if the sun goes out, you will still have power for a couple days.

Faq on Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) and Recharging System:

Q: What is Rainwater Harvesting (RWH)?

A: RWH is the technique of collecting, storing and distributing rainwater for multiple uses. The collected water can be stored for direct use or diverted for borewell/groundwater recharge. In simple terms it is a way to capture the rainwater when it rains, for later use.

Q: Who can practice RWH?

A: You, me and everybody! It will not only provide you with water in times of acute water shortage, but will also recharge the groundwater and increase its level.

Q: Why should I implement RWH?

A: Rainwater is the ultimate source of all the fresh water that we use. In India, rainfall occurs in short periods of high intensity, allowing the rain falling on the surface to flow away fast. This leaves little scope for recharging the groundwater, which results in water scarcity in most parts of the country. Through RWH, this erratic rainfall can be conserved, stored & used as per convenience, either directly or for recharging groundwater.

Q: Where can RWH be implemented?

A: RWH can be done in homes, apartments, societies, schools, institutions, commercial premises and any other space as long as there is a catchment area in the form of a roof or open space to capture the rain. Domestic rainwater harvesting is a relatively simpler affair, where even a rain barrel can serve as a storage unit for rooftop RWH. Individual homes have successfully implemented this easy and eco-friendly method of augmenting household-level water availability. Farmers also have implemented RWH to transform a barren piece of land into a self sustainable, lush green farm.

Is RWH only feasible for new buildings?

A: No, existing buildings can also implement RWH by modifying the existing plumbing and making additions, if necessary.

Q: What quantity of rainwater can be collected?

A: The rainwater harvested depends upon the catchment area, the rainfall pattern in the area and the drainage/ collection system used. To understand the potential for rainwater harvesting, lets take the example of a house in Delhi with a terrace area of 100 sqm. Taking the average annual rainfall in Delhi as 600 mm, and assuming 70% harvesting efficiency (as some rainwater will be lost due to evaporation, collection etc.), we can calculate the amount of water harvested thus: Volume of water harvested = 100 x 0.6 x 0.7 = 42,000 litres This volume is more than twice the annual drinking water requirement of a 5-member family, whose average daily drinking water requirement is 10 lpcd.

Q: What is the cost involved?

A: The cost will vary depending upon the catchment area and the conveyance/ storage structures finalised. RWH can be installed at a very low cost in large plots where public buildings, schools & colleges are located, and this cost is negligible to the total construction cost, if integrated with the building design. If planned in an existing building, the cost is higher due to extra plumbing involved, but the returns are rich in terms of recurring benefits.

Q: What types of filters are needed for RWH? Which type is needed if the rainwater is to be used for flushing toilets?

A: Various kinds of filters are used in RWH. If the rainwater is to be used for flushing toilets alone, there is no need for any filter but the roof needs to be kept reasonably clean. If necessary, a grating can be fixed at the inlet point to the loft from the roof. For more: Need horizontal, stainless steel filter for RWH.

Q: Can the stored rainwater in storage tanks be used for cooking and drinking?

A: The rainwater that falls on the roof is pure, but since it comes in contact with various surfaces on its way to the storage units, some dust and leaves may get carried away with it. This can be reduced if the terrace is swept before the rains. However, even if some dust or leaves go into the sump, they do not cause any harm as long as the water is boiled before consumption. Various filters can be utilised to remove such suspended pollutants from the rainwater collected to make it safer for consumption.

Q: What are the various types of RWH?

A: Rainwater harvesting can broadly be divided into 3 categories based on the types of usage, the area in which harvesting is carried out and the people involved. Storage or recharge: Based on the type of usage, structures can either be used to store the collected water for direct use or to recharge groundwater. Urban-rural difference: Urbanization has resulted in the shrinking of open spaces as well as unpaved areas. This has resulted not only in flooding of cities but has also caused water scarcity due to groundwater depletion in general and saline water intrusion in coastal cities. While rural harvesting is mostly traditional and is carried out in surface storage bodies like rivers, tanks, ponds, lakes etc., urban harvesting, due to lack of open space for capturing the runoff, is mostly in sub-soil storage as groundwater recharge. Rooftop & driveway harvesting: When we say rainwater harvesting, the first thing that comes to our mind is the terrace. This greatly restricts the scope of rainwater harvesting as a considerable amount of water that falls around the built-up area is let out of the building as run-off. Driveway run-off water should not be led into a sump for immediate use or to a source well, but it can very well be directed into recharge wells.

Q: What are the basic components of a RWH and conservation system?

A: Catchment areas that include roofs of buildings and open spaces. Storage units that can be a barrel, a tank or even a sump. Conveyance mechanism which transports the water falling on the catchment area to the storage unit.

Q: What are the characteristics of a good RWH system?

A: The RWH system must ensure that not a drop of rainwater falling within the premises is let into the sewerage or wasted as runoff. This can be achieved only if the method adopted within the premises satisfies the following criteria: Completeness: Both rooftop and driveway runoff water must be harvested. Apportioning of water: To avoid overload of any one system, leading to overflow and loss. Proper design: Volume of water likely to flow through and the nature of the soil in the area should be considered. Maintainability: Design should incorporate features allowing for periodic maintenance of the structure.

Q: Can existing structures be used for RWH?

A: Existing unused structures like dried open wells, sumps etc can be used for RWH as also defunct borewells, instead of constructing recharge structures. This will also reduce the total cost.

Q: What does artificial recharge to groundwater mean?

A: It is a process by which the groundwater is augmented at a rate exceeding that obtained under natural conditions of replenishment. Any man made scheme or facility that adds water to an aquifer may be considered to be an artificial recharge system.

Q: What are the various types of recharge structures?

A: Recharge structures are constructed to allow rainwater to replenish groundwater. The various ways in which recharge can be done is through: Abandoned dugwell, Handpump, Recharge pit, Recharge trench, Gravity head recharge tubewell, Recharge shaft.

Q: What are the benefits of RWH?

A: The benefits include:
Flood mitigation: Appropriately designed recharge structures in open public spaces, will help keep the roads from flooding. When water is not allowed to leave the premises, the chances of it choking up the roads are minimal. Increasing groundwater levels: Marked improvement of both the quantity as well as the quality of the groundwater in areas which have implemented rainwater harvesting Greater water availablity: Rainwater collected in storage tanks is available as and when needed• Prevents soil erosion and flooding especially in urban areas

Q: Is RWH a new trend?

A: RWH can be traced back to thousands of years in India. Our ancestors traditionally harvested rainwater through tankas, johads, madakas and many such local innovative structures that can be seen even today, across the country.

Q: Which of the states have taken action to promote rainwater harvesting?

A: In compliance to CGWA (Central Ground Water Authority) directions, steps have been taken by states/UTs to promote and to make rainwater harvesting mandatory. Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Ranchi Regional Development Authority, Bombay Municipal Corporation and Pimpri – Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, Municipal Corporation of Ludhiana, Improvement Trust, Jalandhar, Jaipur Municipal Corporation, Mussorie Dehradun Development Authority, and Union Territories of Delhi, Daman & Diu and Puducherry have made necessary provisions in their building bye-laws to make installation of rain water harvesting systems mandatory.

Faq on Solid Waste Management:

Q: What is waste management?

A: Waste management is the collection, transportation and disposal of waste materials.

Q: What are the rules and regulations guiding waste management in India

A: Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2000 regulate the management and handling of the municipal solid wastes and are applicable to every municipal authority responsible for collection, segregation, storage, transportation, processing and disposal of municipal solid wastes
Bio-Medical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1998 regulate the management and handling of bio-medical waste and are applicable to all persons who generate, collect, receive, store, transport, treat, dispose, or handle bio medical waste in any form.
E-Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2010 regulate the management and handling of electrical and electronic waste and is applicable to every producer, consumer involved in manufacture, sale, purchase and processing of these equipments or its components.

Q: What are the common methods of waste disposal?

A: The commonly practiced technologies for SWM can be grouped under three major categories, i.e., bio-processing, thermal processing and sanitary landfill. The bio-processing method includes aerobic and anaerobic composting. Thermal methods are incineration and pyrolysis. Sanitary landfill is generally used to dispose off the final rejects coming out of the biological and thermal waste processing units.

Q: 3.1 What is aerobic composting?

A: Aerobic composting is the creation of fertilizing compost using bacteria that thrive in an oxygen-rich environment. Aerobic composting is considered the fastest method of composting, but involves more work interms of rotating the organic material periodically.

Q: What is anaerobic composting?

A: Anaerobic composting is the creation of fertilising compost using bacteria that cannot thrive in the presence of oxygen. Anaerobic composting is known to work slowly, but also requires lesser work.

Q: What is incineration?

A: Incineration is a waste treatment process that involves the combustion of organic substances contained in waste materials. Incineration of waste materials converts the waste into ash, flue gas, and heat. In some cases, the heat generated by incineration can be used to generate electric power.

Q: What is a sanitary landfill?

A: A sanitary landfill is a low-lying area that is filled with waste rejects. It has a liner at the bottom to prevent the groundwater from contaminating with the mix of the liquid that oozes from the waste that is buried called the leachate. Waste is buried in-between layers of soil and is compacted nicely to make it a hard surface. When the landfill is completed, it is capped with a layer of clay or a synthetic liner in order to prevent water from entering. A final topsoil cover is placed, compacted and graded, and various forms of vegetation may be planted in order to reclaim the otherwise useless land.

Q: How do I practice waste management at home?

• Keep separate containers for dry and wet waste in the kitchen.
• Keep two bags for dry waste collection- paper and plastic, for the rest of the household waste.
• Keep plastic from the kitchen clean and dry and drop into the dry waste bin. Keep glass /plastic containers rinsed of food matter.
• Keep a paper bag for throwing sanitary waste.

Q: What are the first few steps to initiate a waste management programme in your apartment complex?

A: • Form a group with like-minded people.
• Explain waste segregation to your family / neighbours in your apartment building.
• Get the staff in the apartment building to also understand its importance.
• Get separate storage drums for storing dry and wet waste.
• Have the dry waste picked up by the dry waste collection centre or your local scrap dealer.

A: Wet waste:
Wet waste consists of kitchen waste - including vegetable and fruit peels and pieces, tea leaves, coffee grounds, eggshells, bones and entrails, fish scales, as well as cooked food (both veg and non-veg).
Dry Waste:
Paper, plastics, metal, glass, rubber, thermocol, styrofoam, fabric, leather, rexine, wood – anything that can be kept for an extended period without decomposing is classified as dry waste.
Hazardous waste:
Household hazardous waste or HHW include three sub-categories – E-waste; toxic substances such as paints, cleaning agents, solvents, insecticides and their containers, other chemicals; and biomedical waste.
E-waste or electronic waste consists of batteries, computer parts, wires, electrical equipment of any kind, electrical and electronic toys, remotes, watches, cell phones, bulbs, tube lights and CFLs.
Biomedical waste:
This includes used menstrual cloth, sanitary napkins, disposable diapers, bandages and any material that is contaminated with blood or other body fluids.

Q: What are ways of storing the waste at homes?

A: Dry waste
Store it in a bag in the utility area after cleaning and drying till it is picked up. No food residue must be left in the bottles and packets. Clean them as you would to reuse them. If clothes are totally unusable, or very damaged, they are categorized as dry waste. If clothes are soiled with body fluids, they become sanitary waste. If they are soiled with paint, or any chemicals, they are HHW (household hazardous waste).
Store them in separate container which is kept closed, away from moisture and in which nothing else is put.

Q: How do I dispose my waste?

A: Compost your wet waste at home

Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Ranchi Regional Development Authority, Bombay Municipal Corporation and Pimpri – Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, Municipal Corporation of Ludhiana, Improvement Trust, Jalandhar, Jaipur Municipal Corporation, Mussorie Dehradun Development Authority, and Union Territories of Delhi, Daman & Diu and Puducherry have made necessary provisions in their building bye-laws to make installation of rain water harvesting systems mandatory.

Faq on Water and Waste Water Treatment:

Q: Why the Quality of drinking water is deteriorating?

A: Our water sources are increasingly getting polluted. As a result the water we get is full of impurities and not fit for drinking.

  • River water, which is our primary source of water, gets contaminated due to various reasons such as direct disposal of sewage by municipalities, excessive discharge of industrial pollutants, use for daily chores like washing, bathing, livestock bathing, garbage disposal, etc.
  • Water sourced from groundwater too has deteriorated due to the excessive use of pesticides & insecticides in agriculture, which seep into the groundwater as well as get washed away into the rivers. Decreasing levels of groundwater also attracts natural contaminants present in the earth such as Arsenic, Fluoride, Lead, Heavy Metals, which make the water hard.
  • Our municipalities are not well equipped to completely purify the water we drink. They are unable to remove harmful dissolved impurities as they use outdated methods of purification such as chlorination and filtration. The pipes in which the water is supplied are rusty which makes the municipal water polluted and the overhead tanks in which water is stored are breeding grounds for bacteria and viruses as they are seldom cleaned.

Q: What types of harmful impurities are found in drinking water?

A: Impurities found in drinking water can be broadly classified into:
a) Suspended impurities such as mud, dust, sand, bacteria, viruses, cysts, etc
b) Dissolved impurities that become soluble in water such as-

  • Pesticides (commonly found in bore well water)
  • Arsenic & Fluoride (found in ground well water)
  • Heavy Metals salts like mercury, lead, copper, cadmium (from industrial wastes)

Q: Why it is essential to remove dissolved impurities from drinking water ?

A: Dissolved Impurities such as Pesticides, Rust, Heavy Metals, Arsenic, Fluoride etc. are harmful to our health. They may cause serious diseases such as cholera, hepatitis A & B, jaundice, typhoid and even cancer. They also spoil the taste of water. When these dissolved impurities are removed, the water becomes healthy as well as tasty.

Q: What types of technologies are available for purifying water ?

A: The most commonly used methods of purification are Chlorination, Boiling, Ultra filtration (UF), Ultra Violet (UV) Disinfection and Reverse Osmosis (RO) Purification.

Q: Why Boiling alone does not make water fully safe for drinking?

A: Boiling kills bacteria and viruses but does not remove harmful dissolved impurities such as Pesticides, Rust, Heavy Metals, Arsenic, Fluoride etc. Just as we cannot remove dissolved salts from water by boiling, similarly we cannot remove dissolved impurities from water by boiling.

Q: What are the disadvantages of purifiers using only UV technology?

A: UV purification has been popular since last few years. It does kill bacteria and viruses but does not remove dissolved impurities such as Pesticides, Rust, Heavy Metals, Arsenic, Fluoride etc. Also ‘khaara’ water does not become sweet.

Q: What are the disadvantages of purifiers using only RO technology?

A: RO purification is the latest technology to come up in the market and has gained popularity. Apart from killing bacteria and viruses, it effectively removes dissolved impurities as well. However, while doing so, it removes natural minerals also from the water which are essential to our health.
Thus it renders the water totally mineral-less. Such water can prove to be dangerous in the long run as it can lead to mineral deficiency in the body.

Q: What should be the desired performance of a modern water purifier?

A: The need of the hour is to have a purification technology which effectively removes harmful dissolved impurities such as Pesticides, Rust, Heavy Metals, Arsenic, Fluoride, etc apart from other impurities like bacteria and viruses. At the same time, the purifier should retain essential natural minerals in drinking water. It should also work efficiently over a long period of time. Thankfully, such a purification technology is available today!

Q: GLOBAL AQUA TECH Innovative & Latest Technology – The best solution for water purification?

A: A: Global Aqua Tech’s Mineral RO water purifiers are based on the ground-breaking computer controlled Mineral Auto-adjustment Technology. It combines the best of both RO and UV purification processes, while eliminating the limitations of a single technology to give 100% Safe, Healthy and Tasty water over a long period of time.

  • RO : Removes even Dissolved Impurities like Pesticides, Rust, Heavy Metals, Arsenic, Fluoride, etc, besides removing other impurities such as bacteria and viruses.
  • UF : Removes bacteria and cysts.
  • UV : With double purification, it ensures complete removal of remaining bacteria and viruses.
  • TDS Controller: Maintains essential natural minerals in purified water by adjustment of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) control valve.
  • Mineral Auto-Adjustment Technology has the distinct Advantages over conventional RO water purifiers.

Q: What are the advantages of double purification by RO + UV/UF?

A: Unlike conventional water purification processes based on a single technology, KENT water purifiers work through double purification by RO and UV/UF. It has the following distinct advantages:

  • Double purification leaves less scope for impurities to pass through.
  • Ensures bacteria and viruses are totally killed.
  • Although RO purification process removes even dissolved impurities, back-up purification by UV and UF processes makes the water 100% Safe all the time.

Q: Why is it essential to retain minerals in RO water purifier?

A: Natural minerals are essential for our health. In conventional RO water purifiers, these natural minerals get removed along with dissolved impurities. This makes the water mineral-less. Such water may be harmful to our health and can cause mineral deficiency in the body. Global Aqua Tech's Mineral RO water purifiers are equipped with a TDS controller, which retains essential natural minerals in the purified water.

Q: What is Global Aqua Tech's Less water wastage technology?

A: In normal RO purification process to get 1 litre of purified water, 4 litres of water is wasted. Global Aqua Tech’s Less Water Wastage technology enhances the performance of RO water purifiers and reduces the rejection to just 1 litre of water for every 1 litre of purified water. Further, The rejected water can be used for household purposes like washing utensils, watering plants, mopping, cleaning, etc.

Q: What is the importance of getting Quality Certifications for water purifiers?

A: Quality Certificates are issued by a third party, comprising of National & International water experts, after they perform stringent tests in accordance with international standards. Not only the quality of water but also that of the water purifier is tested for its sturdiness and effectiveness over a long period of time. The certificate denotes that performance of the water purifier has been rigorously tested by a neutral agency and it has complied with all the testing standards. In the water industry, such certifications are provided by renowned laboratories in India & World, who have set the world standards for water purification. Global Aqua Tech has to its credit National & International certifications from Central and State Government Departments apart from numerous other Accreditations and Certifications.
